Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the tissues that support the dental organs (gums, periodontal ligaments, bone, …).
Periodontal diseases are infections that cause damage to the tissues that cover the teeth due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar.
What is gingivitis and periodontitis?
Before entering fully into this issue, it should be detailed that it is recommended that all people visit their dentist at least once a year. During this visit, a check-up should be carried out and, when the specialist finishes it, a dental cleaning to eliminate tartar and bacterial plaque that has been generated.
Once this consideration is made, differentiate between both types of conditions:
Gingivitis is a bacterial oral disease that usually causes swelling and bleeding of the gums. It is usually caused by the accumulation of food debris that is trapped between the teeth. In these cases the bone does not suffer any type of affectation.
In the case of not complying with these hygienic prevention measures (proper oral hygiene, dental check-ups,…) it is easy for gingivitis to gain ground and for the patient to have to treat more serious conditions such as periodontal disease.
How is periodontal disease treated?
In periodontitis there is already destruction of the bone that supports the tooth.
In other words, when gingivitis appears, if it is not treated in time, it can end up becoming periodontitis or periodontal disease.
The way to apply periodontal treatments varies greatly according to the disease in question and the magnitude of said complication.
To properly treat periodontal disease, we must start with a first visit in which the specialist performs a periodontogram.
The periodontogram consists of a detailed evaluation of each tooth to measure aspects such as: inflammation, bleeding, recession, mobility and bone loss. The instrument we use for this technique is called a florid probe.
In addition to this, a series of x-rays are also performed that will allow the specialist to achieve a correct analysis and treatment plan for the periodontal patient, as well as subsequent maintenance.
The main objective offered by these records is to be able to make comparisons over time of how the patient’s hygiene and periodontal pockets are evolving after treatment.
At Clínica Dental Herrera we place special emphasis on making sure that the patient is aware of the correct brushing technique and dental hygiene.
